These extensions offer the opportunity to wear stunning locs without the commitment, allowing for easy removal when desired, sparing the hassle of combing out or cutting hair.

How Much Does It Cost To Get Dreads With Extensions?

The cost of dreads with extensions ranges from $300 to $1200, depending on factors such as length, type, quality, quantity, color, and thickness. There's no fixed price for a set of dreadlock extensions, and the installation typically adds an additional expense of $300 to $800.

How Long Should My Hair Be for Extensions?

To install dreadlock extensions, your hair should be a minimum of 3-5 inches (8 to 13cm) in length. For smaller, pencil-sized extensions, 3 inches is sufficient, while sharpie-sized extensions or larger require 5 inches. The ideal length varies based on desired thickness, your own hair thickness, and hair type.

Single Ended vs. Double Ended Extensions – What's the Difference?

Single-ended (SE) extensions offer various options such as clips, looped ends, or frayed open ends. SE extensions with loops allow temporary tying or permanent installation after cutting out the loops and fraying the ends with a comb. Double-ended (DE) extensions are meant for temporary tying into your dreads or natural hair, to be easily removed at your convenience.

Types of Dreads

There are 3 different materials used to make dreadlock extensions:

Wool:

Soft & light weight
Naturally antimicrobial (resisting mold naturally)
Smooth or wavy structure
A bit more heavy when washed (comparable to human hair)
Dries slower than synthetics
Can be used as temporary dreadlocks / less suitable for permanent install (color fading)

Tip to help them dry faster: Using a microfiber towel soaks more water out. You can use a blow dryer on low heat to speed up the drying process.

Synthetics:

Looks similar to real hair
Dries fast after washing
Comes in a smooth texture
Synthetic hair can’t be dyed
Can be used as temporary dreadlocks and permanent dreadlocks

Human hair:

Is the closest to your own hair
Can be dyed
Human hair is the most expensive
Can be used as temporary dreadlocks and permanent dreadlocks

How many dread extensions do you need?
Tip: If you are new to dreadlock extensions, start with partial temporary dreadlock extensions so you can see if dreads are something for you.

Mini partial or accent look:
between 6-10 dreadlock extensions (single ended dreadlock extension)

Volume partial / half head look:
between 15-20 dreadlock extensions (mixed single ended and double ended dreadlock extensions)

Crown – 2/3 head look:
between 35-40 dreadlock extensions (mixed single ended and double ended dreadlock extensions)

Full head look:
around 50 dreadlock extensions (mixed single ended and double ended dreadlock extensions)
